I
was already tapin' my foot and slapin' my knee before I knew anything about
this North Carolina based four piece. First, a banjo (complete with spoons)
sets the tempo, then a bluesy’ punk rock explosion with sexy, throaty
rants and hoots. "It's a Scam" is a 'backwoods' anti-everything
anthem. The singer growls, "Fuck it is the new plan" then playfully
bends and squeals with more soul and command then we hear from any pre-fab
punk diva today. "Act Like a Lady" is a sure hit with any young
woman out there with ideas about her identity. The Joan Jet esqe' delivery
mixed with Siouxsie Sioux haunt, sets up a huge chorus that had me singing
along by the next go-round'. "Meet me by the Moonlight", is a traditional
classic revamped by Super Sport with slamming drums, bass, guitars and playful
vocal harmonies that puts this group in a league all their own. Their debut
album 'Whoopass', released in March of 2005, is a must have hot-rod - summer
fun record.
On stage Super
Sport sparkles with the experience and confidence of true professionals. Sissy
banters with wound-up on-lookers in a redneck southern drawl and cackles at
her own nasty sense of humor. The crowd responds with howling like a pack
of dogs as the band launches into a pounding set. With Sparky on guitar, Billie
on bass and Bennie on drums, the band is built like a warehouse of power.
Energetic blasts of backing vocals, guitar solos and hillbilly poses makes
Super Sport like the grand finally on the 4th of July.
With little homework I discover that Sissy (Michelle Walters) and Billie (Billy
Miller) were the voice and bass of Invisible Records recording artist Voodou.
The success of their album 'Blessing of Curses' landed them national tours
with the likes of My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult and Hanzel und Gretyl.
This lead to Walters fronting the seminal 'industrial' supergroup Pigface
who touts the names of Trent Reznor (NIN), Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Martin
Atkins (PIL, Ministry) and Danny Kerry (Tool). It was here that Sissy met
Sparky (Hate Dept. front man Seibold). Sparky - the guitarist for Pigface,
record producer for Berlin and Information Society, remixer of Smash Mouths
'Walking on the Sun' and collaborator on the soundtrack for Heavy Metal 2000.
Seibold is no new comer to the industry. One is left with the feeling that
Super Sport is carefully planning to rock every back yard hoot n'any across
the globe. Dubbing themselves Southern Punk Rock - I see a new wave of overalls,
pickin' and good ol' Rock & Roll as Super Sport leads the pack off into
the horizon.
